Woodpeckers

Woodpecker anatomy lets them peck through bark. Insects and larvae are eaten with long, muscular beaks. Woodpecker beaks drum loudly on wood.

Woodpeckers are usually larger than other birds, however they can be little. Depending on the species, they may have brown, white, and black feathers with a vividly coloured crown.

Songbirds

Over 6,500 species of songbirds are recognised by scientists. Songbirds are the most diversified terrestrial vertebrate. They're everywhere but Antarctica.

Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds number 350 species. All of these species live in North and South America and are new world. As far north as Alaska, yet most live in tropical climates.

Birds of Prey

Birds of prey are rare hunters among birds. Their eyesight helps them hunt. Some of these birds eat carrion or dead animal corpses.

Raptors use strong talons to grab struggling prey. Their big, pointed beaks slice and rip food easily. Some birds of prey, like the American Kestrel, are 8-12 inches tall.

 Waterfowl Birds

Commonly called, these birds are semi-aquatic. Oily feathers prevent them from getting wet. This keeps their feathers light and ready for flight in cooler conditions.

This group's plumage varies greatly. Some species are sexually dimorphic; males have brighter feathers and colour than females. Waterfowl have flat beaks with comb-like ridges.

Flightless Birds

Penguins are semi-aquatic despite being flightless. A group's inability to fly stands out. These birds have big feet. It makes up for the fact that they can't fly and must walk.
