Wegmans shoppers should bring reusable bags.
As part of a company-wide effort to eliminate single-use plastic bags by 2022, six Virginia stores & all North Carolina locations will stop using them on July 1. Other chains have implemented similar.
Leesburg, Dulles, Potomac, Lake Manassas, Virginia Beach, & Charlottesville are eliminating plastic bags. The money from paper bag sales will go to each store's local food bank.
"In stores where the company has already eliminated plastic bags, paper bags are used for 20-25 percent of transactions," Wegmans said.
The 107-store chain will eliminate single-use plastic bags at 27 stores in Maryland, Pennsylvania, & Massachusetts for the rest of the year.
This is part of Wegmans' commitment to reduce fossil fuel-based & single-use plastic packaging by 10 million pounds by 2024.
Several chains have pledged to stop offering plastic bags to customers.
